The mission of Crisis Intervention Services is to provide victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault with support, resources, and hope for a better future. Below are statistics to illustrate the need for crisis intervention.
Nationally
- Six million victims are abused every year by their partners
- 10 victims dies each day as a result of battering
- Over 300,000 women and children are sheltered each year; an equal number are turned away
- 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will be a victim of sexual assault
- 1 rape is committed every 40 seconds
- 83% of all rapes are committed by someone know to the victim
- 3.3 million children are exposed to violence by family members
- In homes where partner abuse occurs, children are 1500 times more likely to be abused
- 40-60% of men who abuse women also abuse children
- Fathers who batter mothers are 2 times more likely to seek sole physical custody of their children than are nonviolent fathers
- In one study, 27% of domestic homicide victims were children
- When children are killed during a domestic dispute, 90% are under age 10; 56% are under age 2
In our service area
- Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) served 514 victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and other violent crimes from July 2004 to June 2005
- CIS answered 737 crisis calls, provided over 1,580 hours of counseling, and provided over 168 hours of criminal justice advocacy from July 2004 to June 2005
- With the addition of two new counties, we estimate serving over 700 victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and other violent crimes over the next year, July 2005 to June 2006.
